Jo Hausman knew she wanted more when she was a single mom in her early 20s. For starters, she wanted to see some places other than her native South Dakota. But with a toddler two and a half years old, there was no shortage of people telling her she was crazy. Today she holds an MBA in Business with Entrepreneurship from the University of Sioux Falls. Greg Thredgold occasionally talks to old friends from school. “They'll say, ‘Boy, I wish I could go back to those days,’ and I say, ‘Not me. Frank Bria knew it was time to rethink his career path when, along the way to his doctorate, he asked the question, "What's the next step after you get a Ph.D. in mathematics?” The answer: "Go to a large city, live in a basement apartment with your family, make $25,000 a year and get a post-doctorate.” After academia, Frank Bria began as an entrepreneur in financial services technology. He worked with start-ups, some selling for hundreds of millions of dollars, and some crashing in flames. Sachiko Komagata was grateful as a child growing up in Japan that her parents had not pressured her into a particular career, as many children’s parents did, but during her college undergraduate years the options ahead of her were limited to a few traditional occupations for women. In the U.S., her doctoral research explored a holistic approach to patient care in physical therapy. Since 2004, she has chaired the Department of Holistic Health Studies and Exercise Science at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey.

Pamela Peeters’ family moved from Holland to the Belgian countryside. “I began observing the space around me, sharing the love I had for nature.” By age 12, she was already finding ways to help the environment by creating a magazine. Pursuing her passion, she became an environmental economist. With two Masters Degrees under her belt and two theses on sustainable development, she moved to the U.S. in 1999. She created Our Planet TV show, the Sustainable Planet Film Festival and Sustainability Week NYC and Belgium, and a weekly radio show, Our Sustainable Planet, on local National Public Radio.

Eldonna Lewis Fernandez was working a dead-end job at a soon-to-be-defunct discount store. Arriving home one day, she found an eviction notice on the door and no sign of her father. She had no idea what to do next. An Air Force recruiting message changed her life. Today, looking back on her 23-year career in the U.S. Air Force, she says, “I ended up with two Associate’s degrees, a Bachelor's degree, and then in the contracting career field as a contract specialist.” Those skills and experiences form the basis of her company, Dynamic Vision International, Inc.
